Three Days Freelance: What I’ve Learned So Far
Going freelance felt like a long time coming, even though the decision itself was made just two months ago. Three days in, and I already have a few reflections I wanted to capture.
Transitioning from structured employment isn’t as easy as you might expect.
Shaking off old habits takes time. The comfort of clear systems, shared responsibility, and familiar routines doesn’t disappear overnight. Learning to trust myself to set the pace and priorities is very much a work in progress.
Doing the work and being self-employed are two different jobs.
Alongside client work, there’s admin, systems, bookkeeping, contracts, and planning. Right now, it’s a balancing act between delivering high-quality work and putting the foundations in place. At times it feels like two roles running in parallel — and that’s okay. I’m building something, not just delivering work.
Sharing my plans publicly isn’t a waste of time.
I shared a post on my personal social media simply to let friends and family know what I was up to, with no expectations at all. That one post led to two potential work leads — a reminder that people are paying attention, even when you think they’re not.
Discovery calls really matter.
Those early conversations help both sides understand whether there’s a good fit. They save time, manage expectations, and create space for honesty before any work begins.
Self-promotion doesn’t have to feel uncomfortable.
I expected this to be one of my biggest challenges, but it’s been easier than I thought. Focusing on communicating with purpose, rather than “selling”, has made all the difference.
There’s a whole world of support out there.
I’ve already benefited from free business training and guidance through the Tees Valley Combined Authority, which has been invaluable. I’m also fortunate to know generous, knowledgeable people who’ve been happy to share their experience and advice — from practical guidance to access to discounts for essentials like this website. Finding your people and tapping into the right support really matters.
The proof really is in the pudding.
The support I’ve received from colleagues, friends, and family has been overwhelming. I’ve already written two proposals, with more conversations in the diary. It’s reassuring to see there is a genuine need for this work — and that I have the experience, passion, and confidence to meet it.
Three days in, and I’m genuinely excited. My days are already varied, I’ve connected with inspiring people doing important work, and I’m curious to see where this journey leads.
For now, I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
If you are leading a charity or purpose-led organisation and thinking about your communications, or simply curious about working together, you’re very welcome to get in touch. I offer a free 30-minute discovery call to talk things through and explore what support might be helpful.
